- Sudo route add -net 10.78.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 gw 10.101.1.1 which works, and sets up the routes I need. But when I run the same command on my Mac I get: route: bad address: netmask I'm guessing that the version of route that is included in OS X requires a different format but I'm at a loss to figure it.
- Basically a mask of 255.255.255.255 is a host mask. Where the actual subnet IS the host. 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255. Ask youself what is the network of this address. Network is 192.168.1.1. Then ask youself what is the host part of this address. There is nothing left for host part as the whole address is taken describing the network.

Manual Route Mask Machine
Go to System Preference >> Network, and you can 'Set Service Order' of the network interfaces and effectively change the default route order in the routing table.

If you are intent on using
route
the man page for route will show you it's the same as most BSD route commands. You may need ip6config
(and man page) as well if you care about IPv6 routing. The 'mac' way is to set it from the System Preference pane under network and is preferred over using unix commands since it honors location changes and other events such as a reboot.
